The following are some of the fun activities that may be taught at Women in the Outdoors events. Each event may plan their classes differently. This is a list of what you could potentially learn in one of the following classes.



Archery: Archery is an age-old sport growing in popularity with many as their choice of hunting and recreational activity. This course may teach the difference between a compound and traditional bows as participants aim for targets 10-15 yards away. The course may also address archery equipment essential to becoming more involved in the sport.

ATV Safety: Want to get to your tree stand easily and with little effort? An all-terrain vehicle may be in your future, and this class could show you how to go about selecting one. Whether for recreational use or a new addition to farm equipment, ATVs have become very popular. This could be your chance to learn how to use and ATV properly and safely.

Birdwatching: A slower-paced course designed to get one in touch with nature is bird watching. This course may teach you how to attract and identify various birds by using a variety of calls, tapes, natural bird songs, field guides, identification keys, habitat identification and feeding stations. The course could offer bird watching opportunities, along with information about bird watching equipment, such as binoculars and spotting scopes.

Boating: Take to the water with this all-inclusive course on boating. This course will offer practice with trailering, launching and loading a boat, along with information on the types and styles of boats, motors, boating equipment, safety issues and legal requirements.

Camping: Spending the night under the stars can be easy with a few tips from this course. Setting up a tent, building a camp fire, selection of a camp site and camping etiquette are just some of the topics that could be covered in this course.

Canoeing and/or Kayaking: After you learn about the types and styles of canoes and/or kayaks used, you may also enjoy practicing paddle stroke techniques and safety procedures on the water.

Deer Hunting: Harvesting a trophy buck can become a part of your life through this informational course. This course emphasizes safety and ethical deer-hunting practices while studying scouting and reading various signs to identify deer habitat.

Fishing: Return home with more than just a fish tale with this fishing course. The course offers information on fish habitat and identification, selecting a rod-and-reel, baits, lures, waders, fishing vests and hands-on techniques for casting and reeling.

Fly-fishing: This top-water fishing technique can be easy with this all-inclusive course. Find out how to cast a fly rod while you acquire information on fly-fishing equipment, local fishing opportunities and fishing rules and regulations.

Handgun Basics: Whether for protection or for recreational use, this course on handguns can get you started in the sport. At the end of this class, a participant will be able to safely shoot a variety of handguns and clean and prepare a handgun for storage. The instructor will provide a broad spectrum of information about the operations and fundamentals of shooting handguns.

Habitat Improvement: Want to learn how to bring wildlife to your land? This course on habitat improvement can help. Information on identifying wildlife openings, field management, woods management and management assistance may be offered in this course.

Hiking & Backpacking: Take camping one step further as you learn the basics of hiking and backpacking. This course may also offer information on equipment selection, locations, preparation and rules and regulations.
"Staying Found"-Map & Compass: Getting lost in the woods will no longer be a concern following this course. It will prepare you to read a compass and topographic maps properly as you learn about survival and first aid just in case.

Mountain Biking: Get started in one of the fastest-growing sports around. In this course, you will learn how to use proper hand signals, shifting techniques, brake action and off-road trail riding. Afterwards, you will be able to select equipment, make bike adjustments and plan and organize a ride of your own.

Plant Identification: What's that growing in my backyard? Following this course, you will know. This course is designed to teach the differences between poisonous and edible plants in the wild. It will help you decide what's what in the identification of plants and trees.

Primitive Cooking: Learn to cook just like your ancestors with this course on primitive cooking. Whether it's over an open flame or in a Dutch oven, you will learn about the types of cooking utensils, camp stoves, various foods, safety and first aid.

Rifle Marksmanship: Choosing a rifle to fit your needs can be overwhelming, but with this course you can find out how. This course is designed to teach proper shooting, handling and safety techniques while offering information on types and caliber of rifles available.

Scuba Diving: Ever wonder how this sport got its name? You can find out what SCUBA stands for and a whole lot more in this all-inclusive class. The class is designed to get you started on your quest to become a fully certified SCUBA diver.

Shotgunning: Learning to shoot a shotgun is easy. Learning how to do it safely is important. This course can show you how to do both. This course offers information on the types, gauges, ammunition, chokes and loads you will need to get started in the sport.

Stream Ecology: A lot more things live in the water than just fish, and that's what stream ecology is all about. You will learn a stream's importance to ecology and some of the stream's life forms while collecting samples with seines and dip nets for identification.

Turkey Hunting: Last but certainly not least is what the NWTF is all about: turkey hunting. This course will provide everything you will need to take a safe turkey hunt. Things like gender, subspecies, scouting and roosting will be at the forefront of this informational course. Information like methods of harvest and turkey hunting set-ups is also included.
